Summary

You always remember your first love。 Don’t you?

"I loved it! So funny and warm。 A delicious read" -- Marian Keyes

It began with four words。

'I love your laugh。 x’

But that was twelve years ago。 It really began the day Georgina was fired from The Worst Restaurant in Sheffield (© Tripadvisor) and found The Worst Boyfriend in the World (© Georgina’s best friends) in bed with someone else。

So when her new boss, Lucas McCarthy, turns out to be the boy who wrote those words to her all that time ago, it feels like the start of something。

The only problem? He doesn’t seem to remember Georgina – at all…

What was the point of all the Ex boyfriend stuff? The whole drama will him finding the diary, like how did that contribute to the overall romance plot? Even all the Drama with her step dad, was all that back and forth really necessary? I just can’t with all that。 If I buy the book I would need to tear out like 300 pages before lending it to anyone because I don’t want to them have to waste their time。 Secondly, the writing was had to follow。 Not sure how to describe it。 It’s like the flow was tedious。 Idk。Now on to the main plot。 The story between Lucas and Georgina is so good! I can easily give it 5 stars。 I thought it was unique and the misunderstanding was sad。 I actually got teary-eyed reading her last performance。 The ending was kinda blah but still good。 Classic and simple HEA。 。。。more

Audiobook2。5 StarsAlthough a story about self-love and coming to peace with family, this was still light and formulaic。 Not really a romance so much as a general women's fiction novel。 We didn't really get to know the male lead and the romance story itself is thin on the ground。 The narrative was certainly funny but felt overly formulaic and spiked with Harry Potter references and glib hints at political correctness。 Appealing to a certain audience。 But mostly, I did not enjoy the 'oh look I'm s Audiobook2。5 StarsAlthough a story about self-love and coming to peace with family, this was still light and formulaic。 Not really a romance so much as a general women's fiction novel。 We didn't really get to know the male lead and the romance story itself is thin on the ground。 The narrative was certainly funny but felt overly formulaic and spiked with Harry Potter references and glib hints at political correctness。 Appealing to a certain audience。 But mostly, I did not enjoy the 'oh look I'm so messed up, look at all these horrible things happening to me all at once' plot, that gets fixed up easily at the end。 I know this is meant to be light but it can be done well! Also, Lucas did not speak like a man! At the end, it felt like what women want men to say when declaring love。 Fantasy can be done realistically。 I will credit it with helping me find a genre of audiobook I can listen to and not zone out from whilst cleaning。 。。。more

Romance is never my go-to genre but I really enjoyed this。 Honestly, I don’t think it was groundbreaking or inventive but I loved the characters and the slow reveals that kept me turning the pages。 Will definitely try more of her books in future。

Well。 This was such a delight。 Ugh, I was thinking about the characters of this book in the shower, yesterday。 Like friends I wanted to hear news from。 I can't remember the last time it happened。 I think it dates to my adolescence probably。 Anyway, I don't know if I can write a review that would do it justice but there you go : it is funny, arsh, sweet, hot, nuanced, perfect。 I would have loved a 100 more pages of this, but the round 300 pages were brilliant。 The hype is warranted! My wife made me read this because I’m “snobbish about books” and this one would apparently prove that “chick lit” (her phrase) doesn’t automatically mean absolute garbage。And…she was right。 This was a fun read, but it also had real substance to it。 The characters were believable and interesting, and I was pleasantly surprised by how the book was actually more character-driven than plot-driven。Yeah, it was a bit much at times for me, and the ending was, of course, completely predictable。 But it w My wife made me read this because I’m “snobbish about books” and this one would apparently prove that “chick lit” (her phrase) doesn’t automatically mean absolute garbage。And…she was right。 This was a fun read, but it also had real substance to it。 The characters were believable and interesting, and I was pleasantly surprised by how the book was actually more character-driven than plot-driven。Yeah, it was a bit much at times for me, and the ending was, of course, completely predictable。 But it was more than just a trashy beach read。 In romcom movie terms, this was “About Time” and not “The Proposal”: not exactly my genre of choice, but definitely worth the watch。3。5 stars。 You win this one, Anna。 。。。more

That’s right。 I gave this five stars, even if it is a romcom, Chick Lit, fluffy escape。 I enjoyed the poop out of it。

This has flaws, sure, but Mhairi McFarlane's writing really does it for me。 I like the characters and the irrelevant set pieces (I usually hate those!) and the friendships。 This has flaws, sure, but Mhairi McFarlane's writing really does it for me。 I like the characters and the irrelevant set pieces (I usually hate those!) and the friendships。 。。。more

After stumbling on this book, I don’t even remember where, I read it in two days and then immediately decided I need to read EVERYTHING Mhairi McFarlane had ever written。 Her romances are slow burn and full of her loveable and complex characters dealing with their own baggage on their road to love。

It took a while for me to get into this book, and I found it quite slow, BUT it ended up being pretty bloody cute。 It was a little chaotic at times and I felt like there was a fair bit of fluff that wasn’t super interesting or relevant, but still a fun read。 Also note trigger warnings for death of a family member, abusive/manipulative relationships and sexual assault。What would you do if you saw your high school love 12 years later and they had no idea who you were? That’s exactly what happens to Georgina when she starts a new bar job - her new boss, Lucas, was her first (and only?) love, but he does not remember who she is。This concept was so interesting to me, and it was really cool to see it play out。 I do wish that there was more romance throughout the story, but the ending made up for it。 There was a lot of questions about whether or not Lucas had honestly forgotten Georgina, and watching them interact and get to know each other as adults was really nice。 McFarlane’s writing was super funny and witty (and probably easier understood if you’re familiar with British/Irish language and slang), and the plot devices (eg, Georgina’s shitty ex bf, the writing competition at the pub) were so cleverly constructed and implemented。 This was a story about timing and decisions and about it being totally okay to take the longer road towards your goals。 Georgina was constantly criticised by her family for lacking direction at 30, but she demonstrated time and time again that she knew who she was, what she wanted, and how she was to be treated。 The truth about Georgina and Lucas was actually devastating and looking back I can only imagine the hurt they would have both been feeling, both after high school and once they re-entered each other’s lives, but I love that they were able to grow and develop independently and still find their way back to each other。 。。。more

About halfway through I wasn't sure I would like this as much as I liked If I Never Met You, but in the end, I think I enjoyed this one even more。 It was exactly the type of romcom I was looking for, with just enough pathos and substance to keep my interest beyond the love story。 About halfway through I wasn't sure I would like this as much as I liked If I Never Met You, but in the end, I think I enjoyed this one even more。 It was exactly the type of romcom I was looking for, with just enough pathos and substance to keep my interest beyond the love story。 。。。more

A slow burner that gets better and better as the story unravels。 The author did great including a few issues that affects women and did so in a sensitive manner。

When it comes to first love tropes, this is one of the better romances I have read。 Georgina and Lucas are secret friends who fall in love in high school。 The night of their prom, something happens to break up this secret couple。 Fast forward 12 years and Georgina is having a terrible day: she gets fired from her terrible job, she breaks up with her commitment phobic boyfriend and she’s feeling all of her 30 years with limited prospects。 Desperate for money, she agrees to tend bar for a wake at When it comes to first love tropes, this is one of the better romances I have read。 Georgina and Lucas are secret friends who fall in love in high school。 The night of their prom, something happens to break up this secret couple。 Fast forward 12 years and Georgina is having a terrible day: she gets fired from her terrible job, she breaks up with her commitment phobic boyfriend and she’s feeling all of her 30 years with limited prospects。 Desperate for money, she agrees to tend bar for a wake at the newly renovated local dive and finds herself face to face with the man who might’ve been the one。 The only problem: he doesn’t remember her。Thus begins a delightful story of first love, finding yourself in your 30s and a solid exploration of friendship, family and love。 This book was so much fun to read as Georgina found herself in hilariously awkward positions over and over。 As a character who attracts drama and/or funny situations, Georgina is guaranteed to make you laugh, cringe, cry and root for as she deals with this impossible situation with Lucas。 Insert a support system made of memorable supporting characters (think Bridget Jones posse), a ridiculous roommate from hell (kinda), a sycophant ex-boyfriend (you’ll likely want to punch him) and a family whose Sunday lunches will make you pull at your non-existent necktie, this book will literally make you happy and also unbearably sad at moments。 The writing is wonderful (better brush up on your Irish/English slang), the story moving and a pseudo love-letter to those who didn’t know exactly what they wanted out of life after high school。 My only complaint is that I wanted more of these memorable characters (I would’ve loved another 3 chapters, at least!) 。。。more

Who said coming-of-age stories were only meant for teens?Although the synopsis places a lot of emphasis on first loves, Don't You Forget About Me was more about late bloomers and self-confidence than romance。 Georgina finds herself in a situation that a lot of 20 (or 30) some-things face: her life has stagnated and she's not as successful as she thought she would be。 She's been thinking these thoughts on her own, but now that she's reaching 30 her family's support for her future has turned to n Who said coming-of-age stories were only meant for teens?Although the synopsis places a lot of emphasis on first loves, Don't You Forget About Me was more about late bloomers and self-confidence than romance。 Georgina finds herself in a situation that a lot of 20 (or 30) some-things face: her life has stagnated and she's not as successful as she thought she would be。 She's been thinking these thoughts on her own, but now that she's reaching 30 her family's support for her future has turned to nagging about a wasted past。 The relationship between Georgina and her family was more prominent than her relationship with Lucas, but I'm happy that the author went in this direction。 Unpacking her relationship with her mother, sister, and late father are key to letting Georgina move forward。 The true romantic moments don't start until quite late in the book, but each scene with Georgina and Lucas felt meaningful enough that I wasn't disappointed。 Also, Georgina is seriously funny, even with my limited knowledge of British culture。 Plenty of the jokes went over my head, so I'm sure a British reader (or an Anglophile) would find her hilarious。 I was not expecting this book to tackle such serious topics, but McFarlane handled them with grace and dignity。 Now that I've gone through high school, I prefer post-high school coming-of-age stories because they just make so much more sense。 The teen years are great but highly romanticized, and I feel like people do most of their growing afterwards once they leave that phase of their lives。 In one scene, Georgina sees the high school jock on the street and now 15 years later, the supernatural glow of teenage popularity has worn off and he's just like everyone else。 To be successful in high school takes a lot of work, but also amounts to very little reward; trying to be pretty and well-liked by everyone means is hard and exhausting, but ultimately not a good judge of who you are as a person。 Georgina's story helped me realize this, and a contemporary novel that makes me laugh, cry and think always gets at least 4 stars in my book。 。。。more

This book took me a while to read, partly because I’ve been feeling a bit all over the place, and partly because I got such waves of second hand embarrassment I had to keep putting the book down。 That being said, I enjoyed this book a lot。 The characters are likeable and funny, the setting is refreshing, and while I had a vague idea of the plot, I was still surprising and in places, heart wrenching。 Very much enjoyed this and can’t wait to read more from the author。
